In the overnight hours, Tanker 577 and Rescue 581 (FAST Team) were alerted to respond to a working house fire in the Town of Goshen. Tanker 577 responded to fulfill water supply obligations and with numerous 2nd alarm companies being put to work, the FAST team was requested to respond later into the incident. As Rescue 581 responded, Car 3 (Hearn) gave a size up advising of a large farm house with heavy fire being attempted to be knocked on multiple floors, with command opting to make a knock with the tower ladder master streams before using interior lines to fight the fire present in the attic area. As on-scene companies began interior operations once more, 581 arrived on scene, at which time a mayday was transmitted. The crew quickly assembled its gear and headed toward the scene, during which time the mayday was cancelled, as a member having fallen into an in-ground pool was assisted and handed over to EMS. The crew positioned itself on the ½ side and noting members operating on several floors, went about placing several additional portable ladders including 18’s, a 24’ and assisting in the raising of a 35’ to the attic where line crews were encountering heavy fire. Once complete, the crew stood fast during the duration of interior operations. At 6:30 AM the FAST team was released with 577 remaining on scene....

CREWS BATTLE CHALLENGING COMMERCIAL FIRE IN DOWNTOWN

Shortly after returning to service following a 2 car MVA on Round Hill Round, Washingtonville units were alerted to a possible structure fire at 11 East Main Street with no further information given. As crews began to quickly assemble in quarters, several people having just come through the area entered the bays and advised that fire was showing from the rear of Antonios, a local restaurant and bar located on the main strip of businesses downtown. Car 4 (Bates) working in the immediate vicinity advised incoming chiefs that he had a 3 story, woodframe, attached commercial building with a working fire and was in the process of checking the rear. Car 3 (Hearn) arrived moments later in front and established command and transmitted the 2nd alarm assignment. Engine 582 arrived within minutes of dispatch to find smoke rolling from the front windows of Antonios and smoke coming from the eaves of the roofline, a report from the rear advised fire on the first floor and heavy smoke pushing from several floors. 582 took a hydrant and began to stretch 2 attack lines into the front entrance to the restaurant. 582 forced 2 locked doors in short order in able to gain access to the floor above and first floor. Utilizing all members on the 2.5 inch handline stretched, 582 made 2 separate advances into the restaurant where they were met with zero visibility and high heat. Despite knocking down heavy fire, conditions continued to deteriorate rapidly and members were forced to back out to the street and attempt to push in from the rear near the involved kitchen.

As crews struggled to gain a foothold on the first floor, first arriving mutual aid units and additional Washingtonville units (583 and 579) began to throw numerous portable ladders, perform ventilation by taking windows and cutting quick vent holes, setup aerial ladders for possible defensive streams and roof operations and perform searches of apartments on the floors above the fire under poor conditions, as numerous bystanders had reported possible people trapped above. Numerous companies stretched into fire and exposure buildings with 1 ¾ handlines, attempting to knock down heavy fire now present on nearly every floor and in the cockloft. Despite these efforts, the century old construction of the building and the numerous renovations done during its lifetime proved to assist the rapid spread of fire through void spaces present throughout. As conditions worsened, command now held by Car 1 (Zaccaro) requested that all units back out of the fire building and adjacent, attached exposures on either side to allow heavy water streams to knock back heavy fire before proceeding once more with interior attacks. At this time several members had documented tense moments backing out to ground ladders and the roof under zero visibility, with Truck 579’s roof team forced to abandon its equipment on the roof and crawl to the safety of the aerial ladder. After several minutes of defensive streams trained into the building, units on scene resumed interior attacks, knocking back fire in the law offices in the rear and second floor to the right of the building and the apartments above a hair salon on the left.

With fire spread mainly contained to the 3 story fire building, units began to perform secondary searches of the building to ensure no occupants were inside. All occupants were accounted for and extensive overhaul and salvage operations began. Upon knocking down all fire at ground level it was discovered that fire was burning in the basement below and with layers of tiled and hardwood floors present in the restaurant and no access to the basement stairs due to collapse, a long operation of cutting ventilation and access holes to utilize cellar nozzles to drown out the basement fire commenced for the next several hours. With severe damage to the fire building and lingering concerns over spread to adjacent ones, command and the building inspector ordered an immediate demolition of the fire building which was completed prior to sunrise Tuesday morning. Units were on scene monitoring for any flare ups and hotspots. A total of 4 firefighters, 2 from Washingtonville were transported to local hospitals for treatment of smoke inhalation and burns. All 3 have since been released and doing well. Due to manpower in short supply during weekdays and the scope of fire conditions and construction of the building involved a 4th alarm assignment was eventually present on the scene and on standby at the station. Standby companies at Washingtonville responded to a car into tree MVA on Route 94 during the incident. We would like to thank all mutual aid companies for their efforts and assistance.

ANNUAL INSTALLATION AND AWARDS DINNER

On Saturday night, the Monell Engine Company held its annual officer installation and awards dinner. The occasion marked the last official event overseen by outgoing chief of the department, Chris VanRiper, who first entered the officer’s line in 1998. Two new officers to the line were sworn in, Steve Palermo as 2nd Lieutenant and Matt Hodge as 3rd Lieutenant. They will be supporting the newly appointed chief of the department, Brian Zaccaro.

Several firematic and company awards were given out during the night including:

Firefighter of the Year: Justin Phillips- FF Phillips while on vacation, performed CPR on his father for nearly 15 minutes after finding him unresponsive. Despite long shot odds, his father who is also a district commissioner was revived following these efforts and 2 shocks by an AED.

Man of the Year: Chris Leavey- Chris fills many roles in the department on both the firematic and company sides of the fence. He was officially recognized for his ongoing efforts.

Top Responder- Dan Branath- FF Dan Branath answered 438/535 runs in 2011. He was also awarded a chiefs award for going above and beyond the call of duty.

Unit Citation- The crew of Engine 582 was recognized for its actions during the County Parade at which it responded to a serious MVA with entrapment while on a standby. For the story see link: http://www.washingtonvillefd.com/news/fullstory/newsid/145987

Member Sean McDaid, the departments #2 responder was presented a new bicycle purchased by members of the department for use to respond to calls. Sean answered 398 calls during 2011 without the luxury of being able to utilize a car. When his old bicycle, used during responses on brutal cold nights and torrential rains, finally broke while responding to a call late in 2011, members felt it fitting to reward his ongoing determination and commitment to helping them and the community.

A special thanks to the Chester Fire Department for staffing an engine at our station during the event.

ENGINE AND TRUCK GO TO WORK AT CORNWALL 6 ALARM

In one of the largest fires in recent memory, Truck 579 and Engine 583 crews responded to 2 Mill Street in Cornwall to fight a massive, wind whipped fire in a large mill/industrial complex amid below freezing temperatures. Truck 579 with 5 went on scene taking up a position to protect a large 3 story mill building threatened by advancing fire and went into aerial ladder pipe operations in quick order once securing a water source. Several members searched building floors and forced doors with searches negative. Engine 583 arrived shortly after, having been moved up from a standby assignment within the Village of Cornwall which had the crew of 6 investigate a report of a fire at the elementary school during its short duration. Once both crews were on scene they were requested to stretch a 2 ½ handline into the 2nd floor of a 3 story building on the complex which fire was advancing into. 350’ was advanced into the building before crews encountered a locked, rolldown steel door. As crews began an attempt to force entry, command, citing rapidly deteriorating conditions inside the hallway pulled all members out amid roof collapse concerns. Once on the exterior, crews advanced the line into the 3 story adjacent mill to hold flames from advancing through a wooden elevated causeway connecting the 2 structures. 583 and 579 handed off engine company duties to Highland Falls on the 2nd floor of the mill building and began to operate as a truck company with a request by command to strip the causeway of any combustibles that could fuel a quick advance of fire into the causeway and mill structure. All crew members utilizing hand tools and numerous saws went to work removing plywood, drywall and siding, stripping the causeway down to its metal skeleton. The fire failed to advance into the mill structure. Once complete, crews were split, assisting in opening up and operating handlines in numerous buildings over the next few hours. Both apparatus operators on scene assisted in water operations with 579 running its aerial ladder pipe and supplying 3 handlines. A little over 6 hours into operating, command released both units and they returned to service by 8PM. During the incident, a fully staffed engine responded to a CO alarm sounding in the first due....

With most departments in the county attending the Orange County Firefighter's Parade in Salisbury Mills, E-582 set out on stand by at 1130. E-582 was to stand by for Salisbury Mills while also answering calls in our own district. With the parade set to step off at 1400, most units were at line up when a motor vehicle collision was dispatched at 1348 on Rt 208 and Moffat Road in the Washingtonville fire district. E-582 was on the road in a matter of seconds and arrived to find a van into a tree with 4 subjects inside. The crew on E-582 worked to stabilize the vehicle and put the combination Hurst tool into operation. Due to limited manpower as well as many units being out at the parade a request was made for a Rescue from Goshen to respond. R-581 from Washingtonville also responded and once our Rescue arrived the crew from E-582 also set up the Griphoist system for stabilization. 4 patients were removed from the vehicle and turned over to EMS. The EMS crews requested 2 helicopters to transport the patients and Congers FD from Rockland County (covering for South Blooming Grove) set up the LZ near the accident scene....
